BAXTER of CALIFORNIA

We are excited to now be carrying Baxter of California products at the inn. Items that are for sale in all rooms include the hand crafted Swiss made tortoise comb, hydro salve lip balm, the great smelling “flammable” soy wax cassis noir candle (with packaging designed by L&E fave Marc Atlan) and my favorite – the clay pomade. Spend the night with us and bring a little something home for yourself.

Check back in at our webstore in the future as we will also be selling the products online soon and you can find more info on Baxter of California HERE.

FEATHERPROOF @ L&E

Friend of L&E, Featherproof has partnered up with us for the week to give out some copies of the new Tim Kinsella book “The Karaoke Singer’s Guide to Self-Defense”. Guests staying in the rooms this week will receive a free copy of the book. a little about the book below…..

Featherproof is excited to release The Karaoke Singer’s Guide to Self-Defense. A dream-like collage, as intuitive and irreducible as it is formal, Tim Kinsella’s debut novel drifts from families to outcasts, all caught in rhythms of shock and ambivalence. Reunited for a funeral, a family finds dissonance in the fragments of their shared memories: a thoughtful dancer back at her bar, a bitter father working in a toothpaste factory, and a fist-fight addict struggling to keep his nose clean. Across town, a boy is locked up in a delusional man’s home. Meanwhile, a teenage runaway looks for a new life in The Legendary Shhh…, a strip club recently passed down to an unprepared heir. The citizens of Stone Claw Grove cope with an optionless everyday, each struggling to recognize some note of desire in the overwhelming static of cliche. Cruelty is a given. Karaoke is every Thursday.

Kinsella’s lyrics are abstract, sardonic, wise and twisted. Here his sensibility explodes in a 376-page cliche-obliterating wall of sound. Reverberating syntax builds into a gripping plot, pulling the reader forward even as it drags its characters down. The book was written during a break in Kinsella’s tireless touring schedule while he attended the writing program at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago to hone his distinct prose style.

We at L&E are excited to team up with Featherproof and select Featherproof books are available in
all Longman & Eagle rooms.

friend of L&E Stephen Eichhorn (the artist who did the install in room 55) has an art show opening at Ebersmoore this friday 6-9 pm- with a special performance by Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Lichens). we sat down with him for a minute, asked him a few questions and got a sneak peek at the show…..

L&E: greetings, hows your day going so far today?
SE: Today was a good day. We just finished hanging my solo show at Ebersmoore, it’s such a good feeling to be done so early in the week.

L&E: how did you first get interested in plants?
SE: I like plants as structural objects and it made sense to work with those qualities through collage.

L&E: explain what a good day in the studio is like?
SE: Walk upstairs to the studio with some coffee in hand. Work on some emails. Chase a cat out of the studio. Sift through imagery for collage material (maybe it’s cats or foliage or flowers). Start a new collage or two. Studio day usually starts over after dinner with a beer and some Arrested Development.

L&E: whats currently playing on your stereo in the studio?
SE: Keeping it pretty chill with a mix of Sleep, Robert A.A. Lowe (Lichens), Om & Soft Circle.

L&E: how many pets do you currently own?
SE: Currently four. Two cats, Poncho & Kevin. Two toy poodles, Lulu & Francis.

L&E: what would you choose if you had to for your last meal (including a drink)?
SE: This would be a multi-course endeavour, in no particular order: minke whale sashimi (recently had some in Iceland, it was amazing), Chicago style hot dog, buffalo frog’s legs, and a pulled pork sandwich with some deep fried okra. To drink, either an Old Rasputin or Old Style.

L&E: any words of advice for the kids out there?
SE: Listen to Slayer.

PROGRESS ON THE INN

things are moving along nicely on the 6 room INN upstairs. we will be able to start taking reservations soon and will shortly announce an official opening date!

Robert McAdams and the crew from Mode carpentry have been busy making all the bed frames, desks and storage units from some amazing wood (some scrapped from the floors and walls of the building before we started construction).

we have had some great artists stop by and work on installations in the rooms as well. last week L&E favorites Nick & Nadine from Sonnenzimmer stopped by and worked on an amazing wallpaper style installation in one of the rooms. also there are rumors of a Sonnenzimmer limited edition print being made for the opening of the Inn (more info on that soon).

this week Stephen Eichhorn stopped by and worked on a great piece. (see below)

we will be posting more photos including some studio visits from some of the creative partners we have been working with and more info as things get closer.
